How to Choose Your
Metro Detroit Wedding Photographer

When planning your wedding, consider these important questions for selecting your wedding photographer.

Whether you are getting married in Detroit or some other city in Michigan or even having your destination wedding on beach consider these questions when interviewing your wedding photographer.  When your wedding is over, your wedding album and your wedding video are all you will have left to remember your wedding day.

Experience Level—Has this person photographed other weddings? Does he/she do this for a living or as a hobby? Are they active in photography associations. Do they attend conferences and training seminars to stay on the cutting edge.
Equipment– Are they using professional gear or a consumer camera they bought at Best Buy.  Do they have professional back up gear?

Photographic Style—Are the images that you are shown, what you would like to see? There are “buzz” words flying everywhere about photojournalism, formal, classic candid, and so on.  Bottom line, do you like the look of their wedding photos.  Do you want a mixture of black & white or only color photos?

Truth in advertising—Do you know who your photographer will be? Don’t be shocked, this happens more often than you can imagine. Be certain you know who your photographer is and that you see their work. Is he/she someone you can get along with?  Your photographer will be with you most of your wedding day.  Make sure it's someone that won't drive you crazy.

Appearance—Ask the photographer how he/she normally dresses for weddings. Will this work for you?  Hire a non-smoker.  And, this goes for all your vendors.  You don't want your photographer standing outside your reception hall smoking and missing important events.

Price Range—Although the last thing you want to do is shop by price, is this person within your budget? If not, is he/she worth the price difference? Make sure you understand what everything costs, including reprints, albums, etc. Most brides initially underestimate the cost of photography by 50 percent. In other words, you will probably spend at least twice as much as you budgeted unless you have advice from a wedding coordinator who is familiar with prices in your area.

Delivery—How long until proofs are available for viewing, thank you cards, finished album, etc?

Offering—Whether it’s a la cart or a package, do you understand what you are getting? Is there room for changes and will it cost to do so? Sometimes the packages are fixed, sometimes they can be customized. In any case, ask. What if you need additional coverage? Make sure you know what to expect.

Contract—Do you understand the contract?  Is it fair?  Is everything spelled out?  When it comes down to going to court, only what is WRITTEN really counts, not what was promised.  Make sure than you have no doubts before signing.  Read it ALL.

Advantage of hiring a Professional— Has proper equipment, will allow enough time to capture images, uses a lab for final prints and wedding album.
References—A photographer who doesn’t have references or is afraid to give them to you may not be the person you want to hire.  Other wedding vendors are also a good source to obtain references.
